    Auto-expand everything?

    September 25, 2016 by Shack19

I find myself contributing more and more (and hence relying on more and more...) to the blog, and occassionally put some features on my wishlist. Right now I would really like some possibility of auto-expanding all the options on a page so that I wouldn't have to click on each of them. Even better... if they could all be nicely formatted into a table for easy comparison. Hmm...!

    Item Qualities

    April 29, 2016 by Ashdenej

In the past few days, many items have had various tags added to them! I'd appreciate help with adding qualities to each respective item's categories. Maybe we should modify the item descriptions, too?

The ones I've found have been [Commonplace] (low-tier or grindable items), [Scarce] (low-middling tier items), [Coveted] (middling-high tier items), [Rare] (things that take a good deal of work to get, or that you can only get a few times) and [Precious] (things that take an enormous amount of work to get, or that can only be attained once).

There are also some odd ones, like the fact that the Bengal Tigress is [Commonplace]. Who knew! Perhaps it's because she's buyable.

I've been away for a few years.  2012 was the last time I played Fallen London.

I'm realizing that the game might be a little more fun if I had some background information on it.  I have a tendency to follow a multitude of quests and story lines all at once and the result is that I can't keep track of where I am in any of them. :-)

It might be helpful if I look for the back story for the game to see what the objectives are.  Perhaps if I set a goal in one story line and saw it all the way through to the end I might get somewhere.  My gaming life is much like my real life: bumbling about, hoping for the best.

    Have a shiny day.

    Lore Wiki

    October 7, 2015 by Birdadmirer

I created a Fallen London/Sunless Sea lore wiki. It already has a lot of the main content, but I really do think I need more frequent help getting the more mysterious bits and pieces (like the history of the Bazaar and of the zee-gods) in. Anyone is welcome to add a page or add content to an existing page!

I assume this is a bug... I can't "Perhaps Not" here, but I assume using an item would fix it. Should I try one of the options?

    Hi again!

Today's redesign blog is all about storylets. More precisely, about needing to open fewer wiki pages in the background if you're interested in seeing (or comparing) the outcome of certain actions offered by the card or storylet.

Here is my tentative new template in action: User:Achris/FullPage

A hastily scrawled warning note: Some things aren't yet fully working, or working at all, but the basic idea is easier access to spoilers and less 'link jungle.' (Among the things that aren't working properly: [^] links of advanced appearance-tweaked options, and seasonal/retired content pages.)

Couple points on what the new stuff does and doesn't:

    New item template

    June 20, 2015 by Achris

I don't know much about writing blogs, so please bear with me :-)

Over the past few days I made several edits to that had a large impact on how item pages render. While some rough edges are still to be expected as I continue tinkering, the changes so far are:

    • heading structure is gone
      • I'd like to bring it back, eventually and when everything else is done
    • description is slightly accentuated using a subtly styled blockquote
      • might warrant adding a "Comment" parameter for anything wiki editors want shown next to item descriptions, which shouldn't look like quoting FL text or need ugly hacks like in Eyeless Skull
    • Buying/Selling displays as small, cute table now
      • my plan is to also allow including one "canonical" non-Bazaar way of obtaining the ite…

Please, dont take this as a complaint. I bow deep before you guys that build this and value every minute you spend on making it! Futhermore, so far I havent delved too deep into this wiki's structure to catch every glimpse of it. But being rather a noob to FL this wiki was as helpful as it was a pain to use. Maybe some of my thoughts may help to improve it, especially from a beginners point of view - and to calm ur worst fears down, I'm rather new to FL, not to wikis (u may take this as a reference). I'm quite aware of the fact, that I dont know better what has been build up over years - I just offer my help, will make a cautious approach to edits and already beg pardon for the trouble I may cause.

    Quirk Changes

    October 22, 2014 by Aximillio

As watchful eyes on the forums and here on the wiki have spotted, the hedonist option on the Give a Gift! A commotion in the Square of Lofty Words card has changed.

According to a post by Chris Gardiner, this seems to be an upcoming change to how quirks work. So if you find an option that unlocks with quirks at the new levels, remember to check if it's up-to-date on the wiki as well, because these will likely change in the (near) future!

    Quote from said post:

    1) Quirk increases will come in three bands. Easily accessible, repeatable content can increase them to 5. Less common content (like opportunity cards or the end of content strands like archaeological expeditions) can increase them to 10. One-off content (like Ambitions) or more risky co…

This post is now largely irrelevant because the option it was concerned with has been overhauled and simplified (no difficulty challenge, unlock level of [20 + 4N - BDR]). Read on if you care!

Most users of this wiki are probably aware of the Notability/Making Waves system by now; increase Making Waves through various actions, wait for a visit from Slowcake's Amanuensis and (hopefully) increase your Notability with the "I think I deserve a more emphatic type-face, at the very least." option. That option tests your current Making Waves quality against a fairly unique difficulty level: [20 - (B+D+R) + 6 * N], where BDR is the total of all your Bizarre, Dreaded and Respectable bonuses, and N is your current Notability. This means that as Notability…

A: Visually, yes. Technically, no. What you see is cut off at 250 characters. If you try to edit a page, though, you might discover additional words when you view the page through the editor screen. The extra characters remain in the wiki's system. They are undigested, still.

Q: There are more words to be had?!

    • You can trade in other goods for Expedition Supplies, which are needed to go on expeditions. These expeditions are only gradually being unlocked... Collecting more than the minimum number of Supplies is always a good idea, since you can keep any left overs between expeditions.

Recently I've been using different actions that change The Airs of London, mainly in the Time in bed storylet in my Lodgings, but also in other places. It seems that the increases and decreases that were previously determined are incorrect and my Airs value is simply randomly set. At first I thought that it was fallowing a new formula that keeps track of my Menaces, but now it's quite obvious that the change is random. I've seen increases to over 80 (from initial value of 20 or so) and up to 101 (the new Airs don't seem to go over this number).

In my ongoing search for RL references and inspiration in FL (cue theme from The Surprising Adventures of Sir Digby Chicken Caesar) I've stumbled on the Whispers from the Surface: The Great Game card. The Watcher profession option has the line "They also serve who only stand and watch."

That is the last line in John Milton's On His Blindness sonnet. While the sonnet itself deals with religious feelings and the search for meaning in life, in has some ideas that settle well with FL. The God in the sonnet is harsh and unfathomable - adjectives which can easily describe The Masters, The Great Game or any other significant powers in the Neath. The first lines of the sonnet are quite relevant to FL:

    Failing to Record Success

It's always intriguing to get inside the mind of a writer - to see what drives them, where they draw their inspiration. In the case of the Lilac card, I think I can make a good guess:

The woman in the lilac dress is very similar to Lady Roberta Meserole (or Madam, or Aunty) from Terry Pratchett's Night Watch. They both dress the same, have an unnerving ability to appear anywhere, both are clearly members of high society but mingle with anyone useful anywhere that suits them (from Mahogany Hall to Haymaker Road in Fallen London, and from The Patrician Palace to Treacle Mine Road in Night Watch), both have some connection to death (watching executions here, actively employing assassins there) and both are cryptic with the mannerism of a puppe…

    4. Paid content, as always, should not be added to the wiki. That includes any backer-exclusive rewards, unless someone can convincingly argue otherwise.

New place to put these: Category:Location_specific_cards — Aximillio (talk) 22:24, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

I think I have a good enough list to start putting these someplace more easily accessible. I was thinking of the Places page - and I put an example here at The University page. If you don't like it let me know, we can revert and think of something else. --Aryenke 20:49, June 22, 2012 (UTC)

I'm trying to track these - getting input from folks at the failbettergames message board - so I'm not 100% sure of the list, but someday if this can be verified I think it would be a good page on the wikia.

The ones anyone here personally verifies, I've bolded.

    The Neverending Festival

    February 7, 2012 by Jemann

    How interesting:

Betterblog: A new era in actions

    Relevant excerpt:

Very soon, we're going to remove the daily action cap for everyone. To prevent people tearing through both our content and our servers, we're going to tweak the action refresh time to every ten not every seven minutes... but that still means significantly more actions every day.

(I would celebrate more, but the obsessive zeal I played with during the Festival was slightly worrying. Methinks some personal discipline is called for).

Oh lookie all the stubs now have 2 stub identifyers now. It seems that pages with insufficiant content are now automatically stamped as a stub as opossed to the wikia's users having to append non-complete articals with {Stub} to show they need information. I cant help but wonder what the wikia considers as non-sufficiant enough to warrant a stub, that has been on my mind for some time now, but i've been to SAP to ask an admin because it's such a minor thing. I would classify it as having very impropper formating or be missing some important information. I guess that now i dont need to worry about it because it will be done for me, but damn am i curious. But you know what they say "Curiosity stravled the cat" and i dont want to be stravelin…

    Message Wall

    January 31, 2012 by Neonix

    From wikia

Message Wall is a new feature that replaces User Talk Pages. I've recently activated it on our wiki - please let me know if you approve! It should be easier to leave messages and keep track of the ones you receive (or so it says so, anyway). Give it a try!
